Scheduling a regular eye exam is important during all stages of life. During different periods of a person’s life, the eyes have specific needs and risks. By making sure your eyes are properly examined periodically, you can ensure that your vision stays healthy and clear.

Infants

Before age five, young children should get an eye exam at least three separate times. Most of the time, these exams are quick and easy for the child. When your baby is about 6 months old, it is recommended that a medical professional complete a vision exam. This exam looks at the basic structure of the eyes and ensures proper development. Next, your child’s eyes should get examined between the ages of two and three. During this assessment, your child’s physician may be looking for signs of eye disorders such as lazy eye or crossed eyes. If a problem is detected at this stage, it can be corrected as soon as possible. Finally, small children need an exam before they begin kindergarten, to make sure the child’s eyes are ready for the demands of school.

Children

As children grow, their eyes grow and change as well. Once a child has completed the first year of school, it may be necessary to reevaluate the eye’s function every so often. Before a new school year starts, it’s a good idea to get your child’s vision checked. Many times children who are showing behavior or learning problems may actually have a vision issue.

Adults

Once an individual reaches adulthood, his or her eyes may begin to rapidly change or develop problems. With many people working long hours in front of a computer, eyes can be overworked, affecting vision. During busy lives that are filled with constant commuting, use of technology and hectic work schedules, it is important to make sure that your eyes are functioning the best they can be. It is recommended that you get your vision checked at least once a year.

Elderly

During old age, the probability of vision problems increases. At this point, it is more than just concern for vision issues like nearsightedness or farsightedness. Elderly people are more vulnerable to eye problems like cataracts and glaucoma. A qualified eye doctor can examine the eyes to assess your risk once you get to this stage of your life. For seniors, it is important to get a complete vision assessment yearly.

Making sure you have a regular eye exam every so often during the different stages of life is vitally important to the function of your eyes. If you want to keep your eyes strong and working well, be sure to take the proper care.
